Lonely Planet includes Japan on its Best in Travel 2016 list
Trusted travel source Lonely Planet has released its Best in Travel 2016 list and put Japan in the number two spot of countries to visit next year.
In its synopsis of the nation, the travel guide publisher said: “Even if you’ve never been to Japan, you probably already know that it ranks number one in the world for that quintessential not-in-Kansas-anymore travel experience.”
The first element of Japan to be brought into focus in placing it so high up the list are its cities, which feature futuristic high-speed trains and buildings constructed from glass and metal that are highlighted with neon lights.
Away from the bustling metropolises, Lonely Planet pointed out that it feels like all of the world’s continents are represented in the countryside of Japan.
There is everything from alpine peaks and beautiful lakes to wooden temples dotted about the landscape.
When it comes to why 2016 is such a good time to visit Japan, the publisher states that preparations for the 2020 Olympic Games and the government’s attempts to devalue the yen put it near the top of the list.
Lonely Planet also highlighted the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route near Osaka, which has been followed by people from every walk of life for millennia.
Three impressive worshipping complexes are connected by the trails, which take participants through haunting forests of trees and past innumerable Oji shrines.
Having been recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2004, the trails have seen an increased interest by foreign visitors over the last decade or so.
While the rest of the world takes the cat café trend that originated in Japan in 2009 into its hearts, this corner of Asia has taken it further.
Now visitors can enjoy a hot drink while interacting with all sorts of animals from owls and turtles to goats and penguins.
