Japan slip to defeat against Australia in qualifier
Japan concluded their World Cup qualifying campaign with a defeat after falling to a 2-1 loss against Australia in Melbourne.
Two second-half goals from Everton star Tim Cahill were enough to secure victory for the Socceroos after Japan had taken a 40th-minute lead through Marcus Tulio Tanaka.
Although the result limited the Blue Samurai to a second place finish in the final group standings, it was not enough to prevent them from advancing to the 2010 tournament.
Japanese coach Takeshi Okada told press including AFP: "We shouldn't be too pessimistic about our performance tonight. Of course, our fans must be disappointed and they want us to be stronger for next year's World Cup."
The Japan team clinched their place at the tournament in South Africa earlier this month with victory over Uzbekistan, becoming the first team to qualify for the tournament in the process.
