Mie Prefecture provides freebies to Group of Seven leaders
As the Group of Seven (G7) leaders prepare to descend upon Japan for the 42nd summit, the hosting prefecture has put together a selection of items as gifts.
Mie Prefecture is known for all sorts of things from sake to pearls and the representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US, as well as the EU, will be treated to some of these delicacies.
Prime minister Shinzo Abe will be acting as chairman of the summit, which will run from May 26th to 27th, helping to showcase the region in which it's being held.
As well as receiving a goodie bag of gifts, the menus at the official dinners will reflect local specialties and seasonal ingredients, reports the Japan Times.
Delegates will dine on lobster from Ise Bay, which many Japanese consider to be lucky when they sit down together on May 26th.
This will be followed by Ise Bay abalone and Matsusaka beef, which is known as the finest beef in the whole country and comes from Wagyu cattle.
Accompanying the meal will be sake from the Shimizu Seizaburo Shoten Ltd brewery, which was founded in 1869.
Abe opened up about the reasons for choosing the Mie Prefecture within Ise-Shima for the venue when it was decided last year.
He said: “There’s beautiful nature that could be described as an unspoiled Japanese landscape. I want the leaders to get a first-hand feel of the scenery of Japan’s spiritual home.”
The majority of the summit will be centred around the recently renovated Shima Kanko Hotel, located in stunning surroundings on the northern shores of Kashikojima Island.
Leaders of the G7 will be given pearl lapel pins and remembrances of the summit.
