Japan unveils helicopter carrier
The Japanese army today (August 7th ) unveiled its newest warship - a $1.2 billion ( £645 million) helicopter carrier that is its largest acquisition since the days of the Second World War.
It is anticipated that the vehicle will be used to defend territorial claims following tensions and skirmishes with China over recent disagreements over territory.
The unveiling coincided with the 68th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, a fact that Tokyo brushed off as coincidental.
The ship is capable of accommodating nine helicopters and is said to have angered the Chinese defense ministry.
"We express our concern at Japan's constant expansion of its military equipment," Beijing told AFP. "This trend is worthy of high vigilance by Japan's Asian neighbours and the international community."
Japan has been locked in a territorial dispute with China over a number of small rocky islands located in the East China Sea, which are believed to harbour rich natural resources.
