Stranded catamaran lifted from rooftop
A large passenger boat was finally removed from the roof of a two story building in Iwate Prefecture earlier this week, despite protests from some locals.
The catamaran, which was stranded by the March 11th earthquake and tsunami, had been perched precariously on top of the building for the past two months, the New York Times reports.
Local residents in the seaside town of Otsuchi had hoped that it would be left where it was as a monument, but since the boat is almost three times the size of the building it was resting on, officials decided that this would be too risky.
Several huge cranes removed the former sightseeing vessel, which was called the Hamayuri, and it will now take a month to be disassembled and repaired before it can sail again.
The operation was captured by photographers who were in the town to take pictures of the new Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric car.
