Morioka

Tucked between rivers and mountains in the heart of Iwate Prefecture, Morioka is one of northern Japan's most likeable small cities. A former castle town of the Nanbu clan, it combines a rich history with a relaxed, lived-in vibe that's increasingly hard to find in Japan's larger urban centres. The city centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, with old merchant neighbourhoods, local cafés, craft workshops and the stone remains of Morioka Castle scattered between the rivers that shape the city. 

Food is central to Morioka's identity. The city is famous throughout Japan for its "Three Great Noodles": wanko soba, where tiny bowls are continually refilled until you surrender; rich and savoury jajamen; and refreshing Morioka reimen, served in a chilled broth. Traditional Nanbu ironware is another local speciality, with artisans continuing a craft that has been part of the region for centuries.

What makes Morioka particularly appealing, though, is its role as a gateway to wider Northern Japan. Day trips can take you to the folklore landscapes of Tono, the volcanic scenery and hot springs of Hachimantai, the historic temples of Hiraizumi, or Koiwai Farm beneath the slopes of Mt. Iwate. Back in town, the pace remains pleasantly unhurried, making Morioka an excellent choice for those who enjoy wandering, discovering local culture and seeing a quieter side of Japan.
