Yufuin
Yufuin is located on Kyushu and is very close to Beppu – one of Japan's most famous spring resort. Somewhat smaller than Beppu, Yufuin is a charming, typical Japanese onsen town that offers a more relaxing atmosphere than its bigger counterpart and is well worth a visit.
Yufuin is what happens when a hot-spring town spreads out rather than builds up. Set in a broad basin ringed by mountains, with Mount Yufu rising above the town at its eastern edge, it feels part resort, part small country town. From the station, the road points straight towards the mountain. Within minutes you are among cafes, galleries, shops and ryokan; a little further and the buildings give way to riverbanks, fields and narrow lanes.
The busiest stretch is Yunotsubo Kaido, an 800m shopping street on the way towards Lake Kinrinko. It can be crowded, and parts feel purpose-built for visitors (i.e. tourists), but that is only one version of Yufuin. Turn off towards the Oita River or take one of the smaller roads through the basin and the pace changes quickly. Water runs beside the road, rice fields sit behind houses, and Mount Yufu keeps reappearing between rooftops.
At the eastern end of town, Lake Kinrinko is small enough to walk around without ceremony. Spring water and hot-spring water feed the lake, keeping its temperature relatively high; on cold winter mornings, steam can rise from the surface. Hot water is found throughout the town, from public baths to the private baths of its many inns.
Yufuin’s appeal is in the combination of hot springs, small museums and galleries, places to eat and drink, and countryside that is never far away. Compared with nearby Beppu, Yufuin is smaller, greener and more self-contained. The centre can certainly get busy, but take the quieter roads and you find a place that makes much more sense at walking pace.
