Oki Islands

The Oki Islands lie off the coast of Shimane Prefecture, in the crystal clear blue-green waters of the Sea of Japan. This hidden area offers rugged walks, quaint coastal villages, giant trees, secluded beaches, water sports, ancient Shinto shrines, seafood feasts and legends of giant squid.

Oki Islands Map

“The Oki Islands are a Japan you didn't think still existed. Devoid of the hustle and bustle of the mainland, achingly green with sleepy fishing villages nestled into the rugged coastline, it's living proof that Japan never stops surprising.”

Mat Eccles, Boulder Office Manager

In September 2013, this island group was included in the Global Geoparks Network (supported by UNESCO) for its stunning geological, ecological and cultural history. The Oki Islands are famous for the 13km long Kuniga Coast on Nishinoshima Island, which features dramatic sea cliffs, caves and open grassland areas where cows and horses graze. This area is best explored by sightseeing bus and boat, or by rent-a-cycle. There are many amazing spots for snorkeling and hiking around the coast. Several companies also offer sea kayaking and diving activities which are very popular.

These isolated islands have been a vital link between Japan and the Asian continent, as well as for trading ships around Japan. Emperors and nobles have also been exiled to Oki. This interesting past has created many unique Oki cultural traditions and shrine festivals. The local people are very proud of their beautiful island home and always give visitors a warm welcome. Take a step back in time to meet the people, enjoy the scenery and relax in Oki. Explore and experience these special islands for yourself.
