We first started taking people to Japan in the year 2000, and it was a totally different world. Spirited Away was yet to win its Oscar, catapulting Studio Ghibli into the global mainstream. Gwen Stefani hadn’t sung about Harajuku Girls, and Japanese food was still limited to Yo! Sushi (in the UK at least). But most importantly for cinema fans, we were still three years off Sofia Coppola’s masterpiece about alienation and connection in the Japanese capital: Lost in Translation.
