Clinton touches down in Japan for first diplomatic trip
US secretary of state Hilary Clinton has arrived in Japan today (February 16th) on her first diplomatic trip since taking up office.
While many previous US secretaries have chosen to visit European allies first, she has broken with tradition by flying to Asia.
During the trip, Ms Clinton will also visit Indonesia, South Korea and China.
Takeo Kawamura, a spokesman for the Japanese government, said topics of discussion will include ways of strengthening the alliance between Japan and the US.
He commented: "We will discuss how to handle the global economic crisis, the North Korean issue, the Afghanistan issue and other issues faced by the international community and the region."
Meanwhile, Tetsuro Kato, professor of politics at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo said the decision to visit Japan first showed the Obama administration's intention to urge Japan to play a greater geopolitical role.
