Hongu
Hongu is home to the Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, one of the three great shrines of the Kumano Kodo - an ancient network of pilgrimage trails that wind their way throughout the Kii Peninsula. This is a fantastic place to pull on your hiking boots and explore Japan's beautiful nature whilst treading in the footsteps of centuries of pilgrims.
Located in the spectacular rugged rural landscape of Wakayama prefecture, the shrine forms part of the World Heritage registered Sacred Sites and pilgrim routes of the Kii Mountain range. All of the Kumano Kodo pilgrim routes lead to Kumano Hongu Taisha so staying in Hongu itself gives you endless options for walking through the mystical forests of thick black cedar trees, exploring the surrounding area with other modern day pilgrims. It is also a great base for accessing the nearby hot spring towns such as Yunomine Onsen and Kawayu Onsen.
