Kyoto by the Sea (Ine 2 night module)

2 Nights: from US$1344 per person (twin share) Trip Code: KBTS001

Take some time away from the cities to explore the scenic Sea of Japan coast and this historic fishing town, where you can immerse yourself in the local community with a stay in a 'funaya' boathouse. Read more >

The 'Kyoto by the Sea' area refers to the peninsula north of Kyoto city, encompassing a number of interesting cities, towns and villages with storied histories. Some of the most notable are Amanohashidate and Ine, and this 2 night module offers an introduction into this special part of the country.

Amanohashidate is the entry point for many to the region, known for its beautiful natural sandbar stretching across the bay. It has long been considered one of the most stunning natural landmarks in Japan, and is colloquially referred to as the ?bridge to heaven'. A common tradition is to head to a viewpoint on the hillside, have your back face the sea and bend down to look through your legs - the inverted view makes it look like the wooded sandbar is climbing towards the skies! The area is also well known for its snow crab cuisine in winter, and the paired temples of Nariaiji and Chionji that bookend the sandbar.

About an hour's bus ride from Amanohashidate is the fishing town of Ine; its fishing industry is still very much a part of the town and its ?funaya' boathouses lining the harbourside are a famous sight of the town. The structures housed the fishers' boats for many years, and while many still do, a number have now been converted for other functions such as leisure stays. The town is also known for its local ?red rice' sake brewed at Mukai brewery, and its local restaurants offer up some delicious meals created using the freshest catches from the Sea of Japan.

This short sojourn into the area will introduce you to a traditional way of life with stunning landscapes as the background to a few nights of peace to consider the concept of ?onkochishin', or the idea of finding new wisdom in old ways.

Start your adventure around this scenic part of Japan by heading to the town of Amanohashidate by train. On arrival, you may want to explore the town itself, famous for its natural sandbar - the eponymous Amanohashidate, colloquially known as the 'Bridge to Heaven'. We'll provide an Amanohashidate Free Pass here to allow you to travel around the town easily. When you're ready to move on, you'll take one of the local buses from Amanohashidate to Ine, a fishing town nestled in a natural harbour. You'll alight near the local tourism office and walk down along the seaside to your 'funaya' boathouse accommodation for the night.

After a bento breakfast delivered to your 'funaya' boathouse, explore the town and discover its treasures.

Today, you can take some time to relax and enjoy the local vibe; Ine is a quiet fishing town, with its 'funaya' boathouses nestled along the shore and their owner's houses just across the road. You can explore the harbourside by foot, or perhaps rent bicycles. We also book in a trip on one of the local 'sea taxi' cruises around the bay to see the beauty of the town from the sea. You may end up dropped off near Mukai Brewery; a sake distillery run by one of Japan's few female brewers focusing on local 'red rice sake'. When the sun is starting to set, you may want to take advantage of the local restaurants and their fresh seafood supplied from the town's fishermen.
