Japanese tourists welcomed by Hello Kitty iPhone app
A new free Hello Kitty iPhone app has been created to welcome Japanese tourists.
The app, produced by Sanrio Co. and titled "Visit Japan with Hello Kitty", uses the globally popular cartoon character to draw visitors to the country.
It features an "On-site Kitty" guide function which is designed in conjunction with famous Japanese landmarks and products.
On-site Kitty gives the visitor information about each tourist destination through 53 mascot characters which represent the prefectures and administrative divisions of Japan.
If users launch the augmented reality camera function, it will determine the closest tourist destination via GPS. On-site Kitty will appear on-screen for tourists to take a photo with her.
The photos will then automatically be collected into an album within the app, along with background wallpaper gifts of the Hello Kitty characters they appear with in photos.
“Hello Kitty has a strong association with Japan. It’s globally known and eye-catching,” said the public relations manager for the Japan National Tourist Organisation, Nori Akashi.
