In Business In Japan,
Facebook hits 10 million users in Japan
The number of active Facebook users in Japan broke the ten million mark for the first time, with the service narrowing the gap between it and the country's most popular social network, Mixi.
Active monthly users stood at just five million in September 2011, meaning Facebook has doubled its Japanese users in six months, the company revealed at a conference in Japan.
Mixi, its biggest rival in Japan, had approximately 15 million active monthly users - the month the number of people subscribed to the service who signed in to their account during a month - in February.
Writing on his blog, internet consultant Dr Serkan Toto said that this means that ten per cent of the Japanese online population are now actively Facebooking.
"I am betting Mixi is especially worried about Facebook's speed of growth in their home market," he said.
"It was just in September last year that the Americans officially reported five million active users in Japan."
