Bond villain lair volcano erupts in Japan

Mount Shinmoe, which features in a James Bond movie, has erupted causing major disruption in the region.

The volcano was the setting of villain Blofeld's den in You Only Live Twice and is located in the south of Japan in the Miyazaki prefecture.

It has been reported that hot ash and rocks were set around 6,500 feet in to the high following the eruption and that a number of residents have been forced to leave the surrounding area.

A local resident told Japanese broadcaster TBS that his car's windows had been smashed by rocks.

"It came like a sudden downpour of rain. It collapsed the window of my car just as I opened the door to take refuge," he said.

Local volcanologists are predicting that there is unlikely to be anymore major eruptions in the near future but the current activity could continue for the next few days.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported that residents close to another volcano in Japan have finally been given the all clear to return home, nearly 11 years since Mount Oyama erupted.
