Japanese tennis star oldest WTA winner

Japanese tennis player Kimiko Date Krumm has become the oldest winner of a WTA Tour tournament in more than a quarter of a century.

She won the Korean Open title after beating Spanish player Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3 6-3.

When she won the tournament over the weekend she was 38 and she turned 39 yesterday (September 29th).

26 years ago, Billie Jean King from Birmingham, England, won the tournament aged 39 years, 7 months and 23 days.

Krumm used to be ranked as fourth in the world but retired from professional play in 1996.

She returned to tennis in 2008 and the WTA Tour tournament win is her first in 13 years.

"Date-Krumm has adapted herself to contemporary tennis, which has advanced in speed and power since the 1990s when she made a spectacular showing," reported the local Kyodo News.

Krumm is married to fellow sports star, German racing driver Michael Krumm.
