Japan confirms attendance at Beijing games
Japanese authorities have confirmed that the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing will not be boycotted.
According to comments made yesterday by Masahiko Komura, Japan's foreign minister, despite China's recent actions in the Tibet Autonomous Region, Japanese athletes will not be boycotting the games, reports the Japan Times.
Mr Komura also called upon both parties to exercise self-restraint.
"While [the crackdown] is indeed a domestic issue, it is just natural that the international community is concerned because it is also a human rights issue," said Mr Komura.
In related news, China's Xinhua news agency has announced that more than 100 individuals have surrendered themselves over to Chinese law enforcement officers following recent rioting in Lhasa, Tibet's capital.
The move was in response to a deadline announced by Chinese authorities, which threatened harsh punishments for those who did not turn themselves in.
