Japanese tennis star makes history books

Tennis is a young person's game, or so they say, so it was perhaps surprising to learn that Japan's Date-Krumm has reached the third round at Wimbledon at the tender age of 42.

Ms Krumm beat her opponent, Romania's Alexandra Cadantu, in straight sets on Thursday (June 27th), to make her the oldest woman ever to reach the third round of Wimbledon.

Despite being a veteran of the game, Ms Krumm was humble about her win.

"I'm very happy to be in the third round, especially since I love Wimbledon and have many good memories here. I think it's amazing. At the age of 42, I cannot believe it," she said.

She said that she had been concentrating her efforts on playing on grass this year and "skipped a lot of the clay court season" - a tactic which she said is "working".

There will be no respite for the woman ranked 84 in the world, however, as her next opponent will be the world number one and reigning Wimbledon champion, Serena Williams.
