Japan celebrates triathlon gold
A Japanese triathlete has secured the country's first gold at this year's Asian Games.
Mariko Adachi, the favourite coming in to the competition, won by 46 seconds – ahead of fellow-Japanese teammate Akane Tsuchihashi. The third spot went to South Korea's Jang Yun-Jung, reports AFP.
The Japanese athlete completed the 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run in two hours, five minutes and 45 seconds.
Adachi, who recently finished ninth in the world championships series, praised the support she received from her coaches and support staff.
"I was not competing alone. Back in Tokyo we have a whole team supporting us," explained the 27-year-old.
She added: "Now I feel very proud to get Japan's first gold medal."
The 16th Asian Games is being held in Guangzhou, China. A total of 42 different sports feature in the games including bowling, taekwondo, modern pentathlon and dragon boat.
