    Last Issue

In our latest Issue, we meet elusive Vietnamese hill tribes, stay at a thousand-year-old mountain temple, and journey to the heart of Borneo's pristine rainforest. Renowned author Pico Iyer offers his thoughts on Japan, baseball and love, artist Amanda Chambers talks us through her 'Survivor Trees' project, and the founder of Real Fukushima, Karin Taira, talks us through the inspiring rebuilding effort.

As if that wasn't enough, we've scoured the world for the best island getaways and wellness-focused trips, and popped them in for good measure. You can grab a copy of the all-new East here. Get them while they're hot!

    Inside Issue 9

In our ninth issue of East, it's all about the summer! What with the rugby in 2019 and the summer games next year, our experts have put their heads together to come up with a few recommendations on how to make the most of the sticky season in Japan.

We've got a healthy dose of Southeast Asia in the form of a Mekong River adventure, a focus on folk art in Vietnam and Cambodia, and a look at how you can use your holiday to make a positive difference to the places you visit across Southeast Asia.

As usual, you'll also get the inside scoop on travel news from Asia, an insider guide to a few useful Japanese phrases, and some fascinating interviews - this time we're featuring the food writer Jay Rayner, who took his family to Japan last August.

Download East to read on the go, or subscribe to receive your bi-annual copy in the post, absolutely free!

    Inside Issue 8

Family travel in Asia is about giving just about everything ago, at least that's what multi award-winning presenter Jonathan Ross and his grown-up children think, trying everything from Ninja Dojo classes to competitive Pokémon Go collecting.

But is Asia suitable for younger kids? We interview three kids under twelve about zip lining, riding Vespas and eating spicy pig's brains in Vietnam and Cambodia. Find your own inspiration for making days memorable with our Experience Asia feature, and keep all ages entertained on a long-haul flight with our Insider's Guide to making an origami crane.

Looking ahead to the world's largest rugby tournament in Japan in 2019, our team share their favourite stadium spots; a renowned photojournalist has 8 top tips for the perfect travel photos; and we celebrate our recent Sunday Times Editor's Award.

In our main features we lace up a pair of serious walking boots to join Chris Greener on an intrepid hike in northern Laos and swap shoes for swimmers on Georgia Rae Dunkley's putter around Vietnam's An Thoi archipelago.

    Inside Issue 7

In issue seven of East we catch up with two very different Davids; David Baddiel relives his favourite moments from Japan, and Burma tour leader David Lovejoy shares the secrets of Bagan's fabled temples. Senior product executive and ex Cambodia resident, Chris takes us on his journeys around the country with kids in tow - including treasure hunts around Angkor Wat, lively food markets and island escapes - and tell us why he thinks it's the perfect family holiday destination.

Recent returnees from our photography tour give us a good dose of wanderlust with their striking images, and in celebration of the New Year we give you the lowdown on Burma's (very wet) April celebrations in our illustrated Insider's Guide. Finally, we have some small group tour inspiration and the chance to WIN a Vietnamese cooking set from our friends at Sous Chef in our latest competition.

Travel consultant Liam takes us off the beaten track with a trip to Loikaw in Burma where he meets local villagers, and experiences the buzz of the rocket festival.

The team put their heads (and collective travel knowledge) together to come up with the very best things to do in the pretty Vietnamese town of Hoi An, Harry Sargent offers four top tips for a trouble-free holiday in Japan with a toddler, and our illustrated guide gives you the lowdown on staying in a ryokan. Violet Cloutman looks back on a visit to Luang Prabang, Lao's laid-back capital, and our Japan experts offer their suggestions for alternative things to see and do in Hiroshima.

Alongside all of this, Angkor expert Andy Booth shares his top tips for dodging the crowds at Cambodia's most popular tourist attraction, we'll be offering up inspiration for your next family summer holiday in Asia, giving you the lowdown on what's new and exciting in our destination countries, and helping decipher the befuddling world of Japanese fine dining.

Whilst we do love sharing our experiences, nothing beats hearing your travel stories and in this issue, East photo competition winner Adrian Furner shares his snaps and his stories from his recent trip back to Japan with his family. We've enlisted help from our experts across the world, as Nagoya-based travel consultant Hattie recalls her first trip to Japan as a teenager, Burma expert Charlotte describes her recent pilgrimage to the Golden Rock, and our team of Tokyoites debate their favourite lesser-known spots to visit in Japan's capital.

In addition to all this, we've got a handy guide to customs and etiquette in Laos, an account of a recent trip to Burma by customer Sandra Stewart, and a round-up of everything new and interesting across Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Burma.
