Meiji Mura open-air museum
Step back in time to explore the heady architectural boom of Japan's Meiji Period (1867-1912).
The opening of Japan's boarders during the Meiji Period (1867-1912) saw the country change dramatically as Western thinking influenced architecture, industry and society. Meiji Mura is an open air museum showcasing the styles of those heady days. Some sixty historical buildings have been moved and reconstructed in the 247 acre park; the most significant is the main entrance and lobby of Frank Lloyd Wright's landmark Imperial Hotel. The museum includes its own steam railway and is set against the rolling hills of Lake Iruka.
