Mount Asahidake
Mount Asahidake is the highest point on Hokkaido Island and set in Japan's largest national park, Daisetsuzan.
The best way to explore the Asahidake region is on foot and there are lots of great hiking trails of varying length and difficulty through Daisetsuzan National Park. Hiking is best from late June to the end of September. The whole of the Daisetsuzan mountain range is of volcanic origin and hiking trails pass ponds of hot spring water and sulphurous vents.
Mount Asahidake is the highest peak on Hokkaido at 2,290 metres. It's possible to take a cable car part way up the mountain and from there it's a two hour hike to the summit. This last section is above the tree line so very exposed to the elements; make sure you are prepared! Asahidake is the first place in Japan to see spectacular autumn colours each year (around mid-September) and also the first place where snow falls (in October).
