Undiscovered Japan
Many people are searching for the “real Japan”, a slice of local everyday life beyond the biggest sights. Visiting towns and areas that are less familiar to tourists and aren’t on the “top 10 lists” is one of the best ways to explore Japan, as it is really lived.
Imagine yourself walking down a street of old samurai residences all on your own. Enter a local carpenter’s shop where the 74-year-old artisan is fast at work and happy to have his first visitor of the day. Explore the hilly uncrowded backstreets of Nagasaki on your way to dinner on the waterfront, no reservations needed tonight.
While some parts of Japan are seeing record numbers of tourists, this is only because most visitors go to the same places and visit the same sites. Globally, 80% of travellers go to just 10% of the world’s tourist destinations. And Japan follows a similar pattern. But, there’s so much more to this country than just Kyoto, Mount Fuji and Tokyo when you venture off to more rural areas and unfamiliar towns.
We’ve explored the country from top to bottom and picked five of our favourite regions where you can experience the very best of Japan but without the crowds. We've worked with local communities that are eager to welcome travellers, especially those who aren’t merely looking to follow what the AI travel planner is suggesting.
It felt a near impossible task to get to just five areas – but here's where we've chosen:
- Toyama – Only two hours from Tokyo but a world away. Think snow capped mountains, a town with carpenters chipping away, walks through rice paddies, and some of the freshest sushi in Japan.
- Nagasaki – Known for a single event but rich in international culture and fundamental in shaping modern Japan. Chinese-influenced food, Dutch-inspired float festivals and tea fields. Be warned, two nights is not enough.
- Yamaguchi – This is what slow travel is all about. Forget the crowded temples of Kyoto, take in the first-rate gardens, shrines, cafes, pottery shops, and izakayas – you're likely to have them all to yourself.
- Nagoya – It may be one of the largest cities in Japan, but Nagoya doesn’t get anywhere near the visitor numbers of other big cities. Come for samurai history and shrines, stay for “ugly delicious” local snacks. And the day trip options would keep you busy for weeks.
- Aomori – This region in the far north sees fewer than 2% of all visitors to Japan. Beyond the natural beauty of its mountains and coastline are tiny bars, samurai towns, welcoming locals and a fierce pride of their apples.
Japan is so much more than the handful of cities and sights where most visitors congregate.
Venture beyond the Golden Route into the underappreciated corners and you’ll discover deep culture, genuinely breathtaking natural scenery and people who are keen to welcome more visitors.
Here's what customers are saying about lesser-visited areas in Japan:
“We are grateful to our InsideJapan travel consultant for sourcing meaningful experiences for us in small cities and towns that are accessible via public transit. We were able to access less-touristed, visually stunning and culturally rich mountain and coastal regions.” (Robin - United States, travelled May 2025)
“Inside Japan have excellent knowledge of Japan and I would like the possibility of visiting places off the beaten track in future.” (Navamany - United Kingdom, travelled November 2025)
Recommended Undervisited Japan Experiences
Whether you've travelled deep into the countryside or you're simply visiting one of Japan's lesser known cities on a day trip, we’ve got some great experiences to help you uncover everyday life in Japan (some might say the “real” Japan). It might be learning to craft with a local artisan in Toyama, forest bathing along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails or singing karaoke in your own private room complete with disco lights and food on demand. Our travel consultants have lived in Japan and love it. If we recommend it, it’s because we’ve done it and we think you’ll love it.
