Designed for families with curious teenagers, this journey through Japan blends magna and rollercoasters with samurai history and alpine landscapes. Read more >

From Tokyo’s video arcade halls, to Matsumoto’s Black Castle and walking in the footsteps of samurai along the Naksendo Trail, Japan with teens is your blueprint for a family holiday that keeps every generation happy.

Japan with teens is built for families travelling with teenagers: days are shaped around your interests with your own dedicated Insider guide at most stops, so you can lean into what your crew actually wants, whether that’s anime and gaming districts, shopping, or a taiko drumming session. And accommodation is luxurious throughout, with standout stays in ryokan with onsen hot springs to reset between the busiest days.

You’ll begin in Tokyo with a guided day tailored to you, a ride up the 634m Tokyo Skytree, and time inside teamLab’s immersive digital art world. Next, the Azusa Express carries you into the Japan Alps for Matsumoto, where you climb the wooden staircases of Matsumoto Castle, with options to add a wasabi farm visit or river canyoning. From there, travel via the Kiso Valley and walk an 8km stretch of the Nakasendo Trail between Tsumago and Magome, meeting families and seeing everyday rural life up close, before Kyoto for temples, quieter corners and dinner with a trainee geisha (maiko). Plus: an optional day at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka.

You’ll visit Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Dome, followed by an overnights stay on Miyajima – a rare chance to experience the island after the day trippers have left, with onsen time and the opportunity to kayak along the island’s shore.

Japan for teens is a tailor-made family trip that mixes hands-on fun with history and rural stops – arcades, immersive art, taiko drumming, castles, samurai trails and stories that bring Japan to life for you as a family.

    • Day 1-3

      Day 1-3

Welcome to Tokyo, a colourful mix of shrines, skyscrapers and super-modern pop culture

A sensory overload in the best way, Tokyo is packed full of anime, gaming districts and historic sights like Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. It's a city with something for everyone. You'll explore with your Insider guide, on a tour that's tailored to you and your teens' interests – whether that's shopping in Donki or powering through the pinball machines. Head up the Tokyo Skytree (634m), the world's tallest towers (a great spot for some family photos), then try your hand at taiko drumming and sushi making. Then, there's a visit to teamLab's digital art, immersive world, one of Tokyo's most talked-about experiences. Lie down in a field of floating orchids, or watch digital koi seemingly swim around your legs.

      Suggested Accommodation: Palace Tokyo

    • Day 4-5

      Day 4-5

Travel aboard the Azusa Express into the Japan Alps as cityscapes give way to mountain valleys

In Matsumoto, your guide will introduce the city's highlight, Matsumoto Castle. Climb the original wooden staircases to the top and imagine life as a feudal lord overlooking the city. In colourful contrast, the City Museum of Art showcases the bold and playful work of Yayoi Kusama, peppered with her signature polka dot style. For something more outdoorsy, head to a wasabi farm or, for the adrenaline seekers, river canyoning. You'll stay for two nights in a luxurious ryokan, with onsen hot springs, and time to relax after busy days of travelling.

      Suggested Accommodation: Tobira Onsen Myojinkan

    • Day 6-8

      Day 6-8

Continue your journey from Matsumoto to Kyoto via the Kiso Valley, along the Nakasendo Trail

Once walked by shoguns and samurai on the road between Tokyo and Kyoto, the Nakasendo Trail is now yours to share with the family. You'll cover 8km on foot between Tsumago and Magome, two traditional post towns of cobbled lanes, cedar forest and wooden merchant houses that are still lived in today. Some families open their doors to visitors, and you'll receive a warm welcome into everyday, rural life in Japan. From here, spend three nights in Kyoto, Japan's cultural capital. You'll explore with your family's dedicated Insider guide, plotting out a day plan that hits the sights you don't want to miss, alongside a few of our favourite, quieter spots. But a true highlight will be dinner with a trainee geisha (maiko) at a high-end ryotei restaurant. And it's not all temples and tea rooms. Head to Osaka's Universal Studios Japan for a rollercoaster-fuelled adrenaline rush.

      Suggested Accommodation: Six Senses Kyoto

    • Day 9-10

      Day 9-10

Travel west by bullet train to Hiroshima, before sailing to the island of Miyajima

With a local guide, explore Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome, both powerful symbols of the city's message of peace. A short ferry brings you to Miyajima island, home to the floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, set among forested hills and quiet lanes. Your family remains after the day trippers depart. Beyond the day crowds, the island is quiet and atmospheric, and you'll get to experience this from your luxury ryokan, soaking in steaming onsen hot springs. The next day, ride the ropeway up Mount Misen for wide views over the Seto Inland Sea, or get out on the water by kayak and skim along the coastline, with the island's forested ridgeline behind you.

      Suggested Accommodation: Kurayado Iroha

    • Day 11-12

      Day 11-12

Return to Tokyo by Shinkansen for a final night in the capital.

Use your time to explore the stylish areas surrounding your hotel: Roppongi Hills, Azabudai Hills or Tokyo Midtown, packed with rooftop views, digital art, cool cafés and great shopping. We'll add suggestions to your Info-Pack. One last dose of Tokyo's energy, and a last chance to stock up on souvenirs or snacks.
