Kurama Onsen
A perfect outdoor hot spring bath up in the mountains just a stone throw from Kyoto.
What a difference a 30 minute train journey can make. At first you're in the heart of Kyoto City, then a quick ride through the back streets passing little parks and washing lines and you're suddenly up in the mountains arriving at the gorgeous village of Kurama. Several degrees cooler than the city and with the scent of pine trees in the air, what better place could there be to slip into a steaming outdoor onsen bath.
There is nothing complicated about Kurama Onsen. You pay at a vending machine, then men and women separate to undress in small wooden huts, shower outside then sit in the large outdoor bath (just one bath on each side). If you prefer to work up a sweat before a soak, there is a lovely hike from a neighbouring village over a mountain pass to Kurama so you can finish at the onsen. Bliss.
