Nyuto Onsen
Japan's most rustic hot spring resort in the northern mountains of Tohoku.
Nyuto Onsen is one of the most rustic hot spring bathing areas in Japan. A collection of half a dozen tiny onsen ryokan high in the mountains, it's as if you stepped in a time machine on leaving Tokyo; ramshackle wooden buildings, steaming pools of milky water, locals quietly making their way between bathhouses dressed in yukata robes and clip-clopping in wooden geta sandals as people have done for hundreds of years. Nyuto means "nipple" in Japanese, due to the suggestive shape of nearby Mount Nyuto, or so we are told!
