Golden Gai night tour
Once Japan's black market, now Tokyo's backstreet drinking dens; there's a lot of fun to be found in the bars of Golden Gai.
Oh, how we've forgotten many a night spent drinking in Tokyo's Golden Gai! This hidden corner of Shinjuku is a raucous slum of low rise, tiny drinking shacks, around 200 in number and arranged in higgledy-piggledy fashion along a few blocks of narrow pedestrian streets. This was once Tokyo's black market and today the bars certainly have an eclectic speakeasy feel; many are themed according to music genre or decade and you feel like you might be in trouble if your mother knew where you were for the evening! Most establishments seat only a handful of customers, so part of the fun is chatting to barmen and the regulars who prop up the bars throughout the night until the trains start running again.
We can arrange for you to join a group night out in Golden Gai led by an English-speaking guide. You'll visit three establishments where food (we recommend the grilled skewers) and a drink are included.
