Beppu 
Beppu is probably Japan's favourite Onsen (hot spring) resort; it certainly produces the most spring water. The town has made a showcase of its volcanic activity.

Beppu isn’t just another Japanese hot-spring resort. It’s a working city of around 110,000 people, squeezed between the slopes of Mount Tsurumi and Beppu Bay, where steaming hot water is part of everyday life.
Walk out from Beppu Station and the first impression is urban: shopping arcades, apartment blocks, small bars, traffic and streets running downhill towards the sea. Then you notice the bathhouses. Some are grand, such as the timber-fronted Takegawara Onsen; others are simple neighbourhood baths used by local residents. Beppu has eight distinct hot-spring areas and around 100 communal and municipal baths, so bathing here is not something reserved for a ryokan stay and it isn’t something put on for international tourists.
If you head uphill towards Kannawa, the geology becomes harder to ignore. Steam rises above rooftops, drifts across narrow lanes and escapes from vents beside homes and bathhouses. The air can carry a faint mineral smell. At the seven “hells”, naturally heated water and mud bubble at temperatures far too high for bathing, while elsewhere the same geothermal energy is put to more practical use: cooking food in steam ovens and heating Kannawa’s centuries-old steam bath.
That mixture of ordinary city life and extraordinary geology is what makes Beppu different. More than 2,800 hot-spring sources produce over 100,000 litres of water a minute, but the numbers only tell part of the story. The real pleasure is seeing how thoroughly the springs have shaped the place – its streets, food, neighbourhoods and daily routines.
Whether you decide to take the plunge with locals in a bath house or keep your clothes on for a night out enjoying Beppu’s restaurants and bars, it will never feel like you are in a polished hot-spring retreat. This is an onsen city: slightly eccentric, lived-in and very much its own place.
