Onkochishin
温故知新
New wisdom in old ways
Onkochishin can be translated as finding new wisdom in old ways. Once you're aware of this expression, you'll see its shadow cast all over Japan. Despite being achingly fashion-forward on the surface, currents of tradition always swim underneath.
It's the Zen temple garden wedged between earthquake-proof apartment blocks. It's on the island of Naoshima where modern art is installed in the old houses of a fishing village. Or you'll spot it in the spaces between calligraphy characters on a scroll hanging in a modern hotel room.
