This 10-day itinerary is a classic Japan trip made for families. Built around experiences everyone can get involved in, the idea is simple: mix the Japan kids and teens get excited by (gaming, pop culture, big cities) with the traditions and quieter corners. Read more >

In Tokyo, one of our Insiders takes you into the city’s gaming scene, from multi-storey arcades to retro spots you’d likely miss on your own. In Kyoto, take a rickshaw ride through the geisha district to meet a trainee geisha (maiko) for a private dinner, and learn to move like a samurai at a kenbu masterclass. It’s food and high-thrills fun in Osaka: an Insider-led street food by night, and then a full day at Universal Studios Japan, with express passes included.

Things slow down in the land of (dormant) volcanos: Hakone. Sleep on tatami mats and futons in a traditional ryokan, complete with your own private onsen bath.

This route keeps things moving without feeling frantic and you’ll travel in style – private cars and in the Green Car of the Shinkansen – the first-class cabin.

The grande finale is, of course, Tokyo. Pick your adventure for your final day and night in Japan – your Info-Pack will be brimming with ideas tailored to you and your family.

    • Day 1-2

      Day 1-2

Whether it's vintage gaming in Akihabara or thrift shopping in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo is a playground for all ages

One of our local Insiders will introduce you and your teens to Tokyo's booping and bleepng gaming scene. Try your hand at multi-storey arcades and video game cafés, and seek out some more hidden retro spots. Alternatively, visit the trendsetting districts of Harajuku and Shibuya, Shimokitazawa or Nakano Broadway, known for vintage collectibles, cosplay and J-pop finds. Tell us what you and your kids are most excited about, and we'll make it happen.

To refuel after all that fun, your guide will take your family to a traditional izakaya. Share small plates in a relaxed atmosphere – a casual introduction to Japanese dining.

      Suggested Accommodation: Peninsula

    • Day 3-5

      Day 3-5

Kyoto is traditional, but also fun. Meet a young maiko (trainee geisha) at a private restaurant and learn samurai kenbu moves

Relax in the comfort of the first-class Shinkansen Green Car on your way to Kyoto, Japan's cultural heart and home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Your local Insider guide will showcase the very best of these, and more, on a full day tour (with private driver).

Step into the world of the samurai at a kenbu masterclass, learning basic sword movements, bowing and performance techniques. Rooted in centuries of tradition, these disciplines continue to shape Japanese culture today.

On your free day, you might take the train to Nara, Japan's first capital (710-794) and home to one of the largest bronze statues in the world at Todai-ji Temple. Make friends with the tame deer roaming freely around Nara Park.

Suggested Accommodation: The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Kiyomizu

    • Day 6-7

      Day 6-7

Osaka is known as “Japan's Kitchen” (tenka no daidokuro) dating back to the Edo period when it was the main hub for rice trading and food distribution

Today the legacy lives on in its street food culture, with favourites like tako-yaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (deliciously layered, savoury pancakes), you'll get to try some of these on an evening food tour, let by your local, foodie, Insider guide. The city's motto is kuidaore “eat until you drop” – so go wild.

And now, for an injection of adrenaline: a day at Universal Studios Japan, home to the world's first Super Nintendo World. Express passes are included, so you can skip the queues and ride and explore even more.

      Suggested Accommodation: Patina Osaka

    • Day 8-9

      Day 8-9

After the energy of Osaka, it's time to slow down in soothing onsen baths. Stay in a traditional ryokan in Fuji National Park.

Hakone sits within a volcanic landscape, known for its hot springs and views of Mount Fuji (if it's a clear day – grab your camera!). Your guide will take you along the network of cable cars and mountain railways, the open-air sculpture park and Picasso gallery. Try the local specialty – eggs boiled in volcanic waters.

Your family will stay in a traditional ryokan, with tatami mat rooms, futon beds and beautifully prepared meals – often multi-coursed, served in small, decorated bowls. Relax in your private in-room onsen or take the plunge and try the public hot springs – as the Japanese do.

      Suggested Accommodation: Gora Kadan

    • Day 10-11

      Day 10-11

Return to Tokyo for some last-minute shopping, or explore the immersive digital world of teamLab Borderless at futuristic Azabudai Hills, right by your hotel

You've got one final night in Tokyo – and the choice is yours on how you want to spend your time. Your Info-Pack will be packed with ideas.

You may like to catch the monorail across the Rainbow Bridge to Miraikan in Odaiba. The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation is a hit with curious kids and teens, and there are great views along the way.

Your family adventure doesn't need to end here. Let us know if you want to extend your stay in Japan, or head on to another InsideAsia destination.

      Suggested Accommodation: Janu Tokyo
