Ikebana Flower Arranging
Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging. It is an acient art that has been practiced for more than 600 years and grew our of the Buddhist practice of offering flowers to the spirits of the dead. Unlike western styles of flower arranging, ikenaba follows rules of governing shape, line and form within which the floral artist can find personal expression. One rule is that all the elements used in construction must be organic, be they branches, leaves, grasses, or flowers. Most classical ikebana arrangements are based on a scalene triangle delineated by three main points, usually twigs, considered in some schools to symbolize heaven, earth, and man and in others sun, moon and earth.
If all this sounds a little confusing but you would like to learn more then our ikebana lesson is the perfect thing for you. In Kyoto we can arrange for you to take a lesson in a traditional geisha district house with a licensed ikebana teacher. Flowers and other materials are included and you will also receive some translated instructions to take home. This is the ideal way to understand a little more about one of the most practiced Japanese art forms.
The ikebana lesson experience is available all year round but is subject to the availability of a teacher. Please ask us and we will be delighted to include this as part of your holiday in Japan.
Ikebana lessons are available in Kyoto and can be included as part of any stay in the city.
