Japan's capital city has made it to the final stages of the competition to become the host city for the 2016 Olympic games.
Competing with three other finalists, the city last held the Olympic games in 1964 and will find out if it has again won the honour after the results of a secret ballot on October 2nd 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark's capital.
The other contenders for the final selection process are Madrid, Chicago, and Rio de Janeiro.
"All the bids were of a very high standard. It is a tribute to the health of the Olympic movement that the field was so strong," said Jacques Rogge, president of the international Olympic committee, an organisation established in 1894.
"I congratulate the candidate cities and I hope that those cities which were unsuccessful this time have benefited from the process."
A number of other cities failed to make it to final stages of the selection process, including Prague in the Czech Republic and Doha in Qatar.
