Bonsai Class

Overview

The art of bonsai has been studied in Japan for over a thousand years. Literally translated as "tray planting", the term refers to the art of the aesthetic miniaturisation of trees by growing them in containers. Although the basic techniques used to cultivate bonsai are relatively straightforward, it can take a lifetime of study and practice to master them.

During your stay in Tokyo we can offer you the unique opportunity to take a class from a bonsai master at the renowned Shunkaen Bonsai Museum. This will cover the basics of bonsai care and is sure to be a fascinating experience ideal for both beginners and those who wish to fine tune their skills. Your class will be made up of a mix of Japanese and foreign residents. You will also be able to see the lovely bonsai gardens and look around the Shunkaen Bonsai Museum which is curated by Kunio Kobayashi, the internationally renowned bonsai master. The whole experience will take around 2 hours and all equipment needed for the lesson is provided.

When:
Lessons are available everyday of the week except Monday's. The museum is also closed the day following national holidays throughout the year.

Where:
The class takes place at the Shunkaen Bonsai Museum. This is located in the north east of the city, a short bus ride from Mizue Station on the Toei Shinjuku subway line and Koiwa station on the JR Sobu Line.
