  1. 1. How would you describe your overall level of satisfaction with us as your tour operator?


    This tour offered an excellent balance of rural and urban Japan in its selection of wide-ranging locations throughout Honshu. It exceeded my expectations of seeing traditional Japan, shrines, temples, cities, gardens, local customs, foods both common and quirky, and amazing scenery, all while using the complete range of transportation and accomodation options.

    Steven Parker - Superb Service, Extremely Satisfied

    Steve Parker lead us in a competent, quiet manner. He was there--always--to support, suggest, and educate, but never too intrusively. Ex: at each major attraction, he would introduce a little history and give us enough info to appreciate what we were about to see, but did so in a way that felt like a fellow traveler who was enjoying being there as much as we were, rather than as a tour guide giving a canned spiel. He went out of his way to help translate when needed, and provided extra service when we needed a phone call made to confirm a temple or restaurant or ticket reservation. He was equally amiable with all tour group members, even ones that clamored for more attention than some. He made it work! The range of optional activities he offered was really nice, allowing for individual tastes, and I appreciated that we each could do our own thing with his support.

    Amy (and Alice Volkmar) were very helpful and provided information in a very timely manner. They answered all my questions, helped us extend our tour and rail pass, and were super personable while doing so.

  5. 5. How would you rate the accommodation against your expectations?

    Exceeded my expectations

    See specific comments on hotel in 4b. The traditional Japanese ryokans and inns were outstanding I particularly like the Iwatakan in Takayama and the temple lodging in Nagano. The western style hotes--with the one exception--were great, too. The hotel IJT added for us as an extention in Kyoto--the Daiwa Roynet Shijo Karasuma was wonderful, thanks.

  6. 6. Please give us your comments on the transport included in your package.

    Loved the variety of trains, busses, metro--and really enjoyed all the walking! See notes on paying for taxis in 4b just needed a better heads-up on it.

  7. 7. Please tell us your thoughts on the meals included during your tour.

    Steve did a great job of introducing us to a range of local and national foods ,or suggesting where to go to find other options I liked having the base of a good Japanese/Western breakfast mix (although there was one weird mixup, at the Garden Hotel perhaps? where we weren't allowed to from eat the Japanese buffet and the western food was atrocious. I'm sure Steve has reported that already. The convenience stores were so handy and good I lived on onigiri and a salad many nights. One side trip to introduce might be a grocery store: we ferreted them out ourselves, but it would have been fun to have our guide with us to interpret. It was a lot of fun to try.

    The flexbility of tour types, the small tour offering, the competence of the guide, the chance to have transportationand accommodations taken care of (especially for a first-time visitor) but still hae many options of daily activities. Perfect balance!
