There are the stories of Hiroshima\u2019s recovery and regeneration: of its significant feudal history as a once-thriving castle town; its history as a port city on the Seto Inland Sea \u2013 a place with a distinct culinary identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-bottom=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-bottom=\"0px\" data-ccp-border-between=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-between=\"0px\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">And, what really brings Hiroshima\u2019s stories to life are its locals guides. We recently sent freelance writer and editor, Kate Crockett, to Hiroshima. Here, she met with four guides that we\u2019re proud to work with, each with their own deeply personal perspective and experience to offer. Born and raised close to the hypocenter, Ogura-san survived the blast after her father\u202f\u2013 fearing what was to come for the city \u2013 had the foresight to move the family to Hiroshima\u2019s suburbs. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">My memory is so clear: and while I have a clear memory, I want people to hear my story,\u201d she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-bottom=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-bottom=\"0px\" data-ccp-border-between=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-between=\"0px\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">I heard her firsthand, deeply personal account of this dawn of the nuclear age during a private meeting at the impactful <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. With his irrepressible energy, knowledge and unflinching insights, Shin is the most extraordinary company in which to explore Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-bottom=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-bottom=\"0px\" data-ccp-border-between=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-between=\"0px\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWhen I was 11 years old, I heard my grandparents experiences of the bombing. They told me everything they could about their traumatic experience, keeping nothing from me. I was so shocked I couldn\u2019t sleep for five days. But my grandpa gave me a great message. He said to me, \u2018We all have an ability to create peace through hope. Shin, you can create peace by making friends all over the world, because who can drop a bomb on their friends?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-bottom=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-bottom=\"0px\" data-ccp-border-between=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-between=\"0px\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Shin has taken his grandfather\u2019s message as his call to action, connecting with global visitors every day. Cycle tours with Shin start at the Rest House in the Peace Memorial Park, a former kimono shop and survivor building with its own remarkable story. Joy\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">knowledge of how post-war Hiroshima has emerged as the dynamic, cosmopolitan and forward-looking city of peace that it is today \u2013 and the challenges it still faces \u2013 is wide-ranging and deeply insightful.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-bottom=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-bottom=\"0px\" data-ccp-border-between=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-between=\"0px\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">During a half-day, private walking tour in Joy\u2019s convivial company, I discovered a side of Hiroshima City that was off the beaten tourist trail \u2013 because she tailors the tour entirely to each guest\u2019s interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-bottom=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-bottom=\"0px\" data-ccp-border-between=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-between=\"0px\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">She told me about a recent request from an InsideJapan Tours customer: guiding<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> around some of Hiroshima\u2019s 160 or so <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">hibakujumoku \u2013 <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">survivor trees that sprung new growth even after the scorching of the atomic blast. Made with cabbage, soba noodles, bean sprouts and egg, and slathered in special sauce (there\u2019s a whole district dedicated to making it), Hiroshima <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">okonomiyaki<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is ubiquitous and high-quality. Ask any local and they\u2019ll point you to their favourite counter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-bottom=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-bottom=\"0px\" data-ccp-border-between=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-between=\"0px\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">But I was after a deeper dive into Hiroshima\u2019s food scene, and InsideJapan Tours hooked me up for an evening with local cook and culinary guide, Ami Onda.
