I loved the difference between them and American comics, which I still adore. It was a step on from that to anime, I\u2019ve always liked science fiction stories but obviously Japan has a unique cultural take on that kind of thing.<\/p>\n<p>[<em>Japanorama<\/em>] was the chance to go out there and talk about the culture in a way I hoped would not be\u2026 I don\u2019t want to be negative about other people, but when I\u2019d seen shows on TV like <em>Clive James in Japan<\/em>, even though I enjoyed them, they came from the angle of \u201clook at these funny people\u201d. I never felt comfortable with that, I\u2019ve always been so admiring of the differences. I never thought it was \u2018silly\u2019 or \u2018weird\u2019, I always thought it was exciting and different. That kind of sums up Japan for me \u2013 exciting and different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have a favourite place?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You know what? I can never pick favourites. If you\u2019re talking about a family place, we loved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidejapantours.com\/japanese-destinations\/hakone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hakone<\/a> and the open art gallery sculpture garden. The <em>onsen<\/em> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidejapantours.com\/experience-japan\/i-sg003-8\/hot-spring-ryokan-stay-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>ryokan<\/em> <\/a>we stayed at was just beautiful. It was a lovely experience, incredibly comfortable and wonderful food; we like to think of ourselves as good travellers because we are always respectful, like when we had\u2026 what are those big feasts?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Kaiseki?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yes, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidejapantours.com\/experience-japan\/i-sg004-8\/ryokan-dinner-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>kaiseki<\/em> <\/a>dinners. Sometimes you\u2019re given things I\u2019m sure some Western people would say \u201cI can\u2019t eat this\u201d to, but we always provide them with an empty plate! It was fascinating as well, because you learn so much about the history, which has been widely misrepresented in the media. Fake food making in Tokyo was great fun too. What we also liked &#8211; but people do have to be a bit more adventurous &#8211; is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidejapantours.com\/experience-japan\/i-ta004-14\/nagashima-spa-land\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nagashima Spa Land<\/a>. I think we were the only Westerners there, it was a lively, joyful place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How would you rate Japanese theme parks? You\u2019re a bit of a fan, aren\u2019t you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidejapantours.com\/experience-japan\/i-ta007-14\/fuji-q-highland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fuji-Q<\/a> to everyone, the hotel there wasn\u2019t particularly high-end, but it was still luxurious and comfortable, and the people were super friendly. In Japan, you\u2019re also lucky because you\u2019ve got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidejapantours.com\/experience-japan\/i-ta002-14\/disneyland-and-disneysea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DisneySea<\/a>. I would suggest that to any Western travellers because it\u2019s recognisably Disney, but also uniquely Japanese. There are rides that only exist there and the food and culture is very different. Also, we\u2019re still collecting Pok\u00e9mon; if you want to catch Pok\u00e9mon, we\u2019ve never got so many as from walking around there.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em> lives on in the Ross family?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes! I\u2019m on level 37. There\u2019s one Pok\u00e9mon you can only get in Japan called Far Fetched. The classic is Studio Ghibli. Do a bit of research yourself too so you get an idea of what\u2019s available. You guys are great and know so much, but you can\u2019t be mind readers so it\u2019s good to know what you\u2019re excited about.<\/p>\n<p>If anyone\u2019s interested in vintage Japanese toys or movie posters, they should take a trip out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidejapantours.com\/experience-japan\/i-amj200-19\/nakano-broadway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nakano Broadway<\/a>. For people like me who like that kind of stuff, it\u2019s heaven. The cookery class was also fun, as was the mother of pearl workshop. The people were sweet and very calm, and we came home with a nice tray.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ve mentioned people a lot through this, Japan is largely about the people isn\u2019t it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a mixture of the people and being a spectacular place to go to. There\u2019s breathtaking natural beauty but also some remarkable man-made attractions. If you\u2019ve got little kids, spending the morning at SEGA Joypolis over in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidejapantours.com\/experience-japan\/i-odaiba-8\/odaiba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Odaiba<\/a> or Sunshine City and Namja Town is amazing.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many things when you\u2019re there, like an aquarium on the top floor and a dog petting area. It\u2019s a good place to go when you arrive. The first day is often a bit arduous because you\u2019ve got that terrible jetlag and you need to stay awake. The hotel probably isn\u2019t ready for you for four or five hours, so leave your bags and go somewhere that\u2019s noisy.
