Unfortunately, this is getting harder and harder as tickets sell out ever faster, and restrictions are made tighter to prevent touts selling them on at inflated prices (yep, it\u2019s that popular).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t blame Ghibli for any of this, mind. From the museum\u2019s inception it has been very ethically minded, and its reasons for tightening restrictions are to keep tickets affordable for its fans. When you think that they could easily be raking in the big bucks in the style of Disneyland et al, it\u2019s a very commendable stance to take.<\/p>\n<p>So the bottom line is, you can still get tickets to the Ghibli Museum \u2013 but nothing is guaranteed.<\/p>\n<h1>What if I don\u2019t get a ticket?<\/h1>\n<p>If you\u2019ve come up empty-handed \u2013 what are your other options?<\/p>\n<p>Well, if you\u2019re a bona fide, die-hard Ghibli fan and nothing but the real deal will do, have a look at this blog post about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidejapantours.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/03\/in-miyazakis-footsteps-5-destinations-for-ghibli-fans\/\">Ghibli locations across Japan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Studio Ghibli at Roppongi Hills<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re travelling to Japan between the 7<sup>th<\/sup> of July and the 11<sup>th<\/sup> of September 2016, you\u2019re in luck. Throughout this period, Tokyo\u2019s Roppongi Hills will be hosting a Studio Ghibli exhibition packed with paraphernalia from the films of the past 30 years, including drawings, posters, proposals and all kinds of material giving you an insight into the workings of the anime masters. Read on\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Take a video game day tour<\/h2>\n<p>There is perhaps nothing that has brought Japanese pop culture to younger generations in the West than video games. Some of the most groundbreaking innovations in gaming have come from Japan\u2019s great giants \u2013 the likes of Nintendo, Sega, Sony, Namco, Capcom, and more \u2013 and there is barely a house in the Western world that hasn\u2019t possessed a Japanese-made games console at some point in time.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Tokyo is still a Mecca for gamers \u2013 but you don\u2019t have to be an insider to enjoy getting to know the plethora of game stores, multi-storey arcades and video game caf\u00e9s the city has to offer. Some of them fantastic, and some of them decidedly dodgy \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidejapantours.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/22\/tokyos-top-ten-wackiest-restaurants\/\">and you can read more about them here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These are our favourites, all of them located in Tokyo:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final Fantasy Caf\u00e9<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re a fan of the immersive <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Final_Fantasy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Final Fantasy<\/a> franchise, don\u2019t miss the awesome Eorzea Final Fantasy Caf\u00e9. It\u2019s modelled on the Carline Canopy (the in-game location from Final Fantasy XIV, as any fan will surely recognise), is decorated with props and weapons from the franchise, and has computers set up for customers to play Final Fantasy. The FF-themed food and drinks aren\u2019t cheap, but they are good \u2013 which is more than can be said for some of the locations on this list.<\/p>\n<h3>Kawaii Monster Caf\u00e9<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s not anime or video game themed, but the latest offering from Japan\u2019s themed dining scene is certainly an interesting look into the world of quirky Japanese pop culture. Our travel consultant, Ali, visited recently and described it as Harajuku meets Willy Wonka meets Alice in Wonderland. It would be fairer to call it a \u201crobot cabaret\u201d than a restaurant as the food is dire, but what a show! Flashing lights, giant fembots, bikini-clad girls, dinosaurs, sharks, neon tanks\u2026 no words can describe it, and no photos can capture it. Entering via a shadowy, half-hidden doorway, you\u2019ll sent off through a dimly lit corridor \u2013 or \u201cninja training passage\u201d \u2013 where you\u2019ll have to survive several booby traps and discover secret doors to enter the restaurant. Once inside, you\u2019ll be kept entertained by ninja magic tricks, and enjoy ninja-themed (and actually really delicious) food.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidejapantours.com\/blog\/2016\/01\/29\/fun-food-tokyos-ninja-restaurant\/\">Travel consultant Amy tried it out \u2013 read her review here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>One Piece Restaurant<\/h3>\n<p>The last themed restaurant on our list, One Piece Restaurant Baratie is located on Tokyo\u2019s futuristic Odaiba Island \u2013 also home to Tokyo\u2019s life-size Gundam Wing Suit, which is always worth a visit! For those who don\u2019t know, One Piece is a phenomenally popular anime and manga cartoon based around the escapades of the Straw Hat Pirates.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fujiko Doraemon Museum<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in getting to grips with one of Japan\u2019s classic manga serialisations, the Fujiko Doraemon Museum is an excellent option. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doraemon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doraemon<\/a> is a mechanical cat who travels back in time from the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> century to help a young boy in the present, and the series was first published in 1969. Doraemon remains popular today, and you\u2019ll see his likeness plastered across all kinds of goods in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Doraemon was created by the writing duo Fujiko Fujio, and the museum is dedicated to one half of the pairing: Fujiko F. Fujio (real name Hiroshi Fujimoto). The museum features a wide range of characters from the Doraemon series and other Fujiko cartoons, a recreation of Fujio\u2019s studio, a collection of his books and cameras, a theatre showing cartoons, and a huge collection of original drawings and memorabilia.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>J-World Tokyo<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>J-World is an indoor theme park based around Shonen Jump, one of Japan\u2019s most popular manga anthologies, which boasts some of the world\u2019s most popular manga titles \u2013 including Dragonball Z, One Piece, Naruto and Bleach. Inside the park you\u2019ll have the chance to immerse yourself in virtual reality games, become a Super Saiyan, take a One-Piece-themed spin ride and walk through a ninja maze, amongst various other attractions.
