Following a rather unusual career trajectory, Richard was an okonomiyaki chef, a novice monk, an English teacher and an InsideJapan travel consultant before finally becoming a tour leader – which he remains today.

Richard is InsideJapan’s resident Zen fanatic, having studied Asian religion at SOAS in London and spent a cumulative total of two months at Daijo-ji training temple in Kanazawa. If there is anything you need to know about temple architecture, dry-rock gardens, Zenga ink painting or obscure Japanese philosophy – Richard is your man. And if you fancy an evening of gorging on wine and cheese, Richard is your man for that too.
