Reasons to be cheerful in the Autumn
Seen New England in the fall? Just take a look at ‘aki’ in Japan.
Japan is a nation proud of its four seasons and the distinctive atmospheres and events associated with each. Most people know of Japan’s beauty during the spring cherry blossom season, and the country attracts plenty of overseas visitors at this time, but nature’s stunning, lesser known autumn display is more than its match. Coupled with a series of cultural events and festivals, it’s a season to savour.
Although Japan’s seasons are very similar to those of Britain, its summer lasts longer with the clement weather of bright sunny days reaching into the autumn and lasting well into November.
As the temperature begins to drop in mid November (earlier in Hokkaido and more northerly areas of Japan) the trees start to change colour (a process known as koyo) putting on an arresting display on mountainsides and in temple gardens all over the country. Japanese maple trees set the landscape awash with vivid reds and golds (momji) as koyo progresses, so much so that a popular Japanese past-time is just to sit and admire views, whether reclining in a hot spring bath or relaxing in a temple.
Autumn is an exciting time in Japan and the festival or matsuri is a great cultural experience. As it is such a visual season there are countless festivals linked to the autumnal foliage and harvest-time, such as the Kyoto ‘Jidai’ festival and the Hakone ‘Daimyo’ festivals taking place in late October and early November. November also sees the final sumo grand tournament of the year, a thrilling climax to Japan’s ancient sport which takes place in Fukuoka, where the wrestlers will give it their all to rise up through the ranks.
