A ride based on the 2001 Disney film Monsters, Inc has been launched at the Tokyo Disneyland resort.

The attraction sees the characters of the film featured, retracing the creatures that powered the city of Monstropolis by using the power of children's screams, Japan Today reports.

Later in the film the monsters discovered that laughter generated more energy, following an incident in which one of the children escapes from her own world into Monstropolis.

The ride is entitled: "Monsters, Inc Ride and Go Seek!"

Commenting on the launch, president of Panasonic Fumio Ohtsubo said: "Monsters, Inc is an attraction fully reflecting Disney's ample imagination. We surely hope that this will be the number one attraction."

Disneyland Tokyo is enjoying large attendances as Japanese fans of the films visit the location instead of the American versions, the Los Angeles Times reports.

In the year to the end of March, the attraction saw a 7.1 per cent rise in visitors on the previous 12-month period.
