Japan wins judo gold in Beijing
Japan scooped another gold medal at the Beijing Olympics today (August 15th) when Satoshi Ishii emerged triumphant in the men's judo competition.

It is the first time Ishii has fought in a major world tournament, reports the Daily Yomiuri Online.

He defeated the Asian champion Abdullo Tangriev of Uzbekistan in the final at the Beijing University of Science and Technology.

The victory takes Japan's overall medal tally in the games to six.

Meanwhile, Maki Tsukada lost her Olympic title and had to settle for a silver medal in the women's competition. With 16 seconds to go, she had been leading in her match against Chinese opponent Tong Wen until she was defeated by a flip.

In related news, Mongolia won its first Olympic gold on the judo mats yesterday (August 14th) while China won its second thanks to the efforts of Yang Xiuli, reports the International Herald Tribune.
