Japan's number one tennis star jumped an incredible eight places up the ATP World Rankings after a 6-1 6-3 loss to grand slam champion Roger Federer in the final of the Swiss Basel Open.
Born in Shimane, 21-year-old Kei Nishikori became the 24th highest ranking tennis player in the world following a stunning performance at the indoor competition.
He trumped the biggest name in men's tennis, Novak Djokovic, to compete against the world number four in the final.
Despite a tough blow for the young player, who overcame all the odds to be one step away from Basel's champion, he remained optimistic about his opponent.
Nishikori said: "It was a dream come true. He has always been my idol. It was a great experience for me."
The star also anticipated facing Federer in the near future, adding that he was "looking forward to playing against him again".
The pair have gone head-to-head in previous years, however, that was when they were training together in the US.
Nishikori, who plays right-handed, currently resides in Bradenton, Florida.
