A public-private initiative is set to invest in overseas projects that aim to build so-called 'green cities'.
According to the Nikkei newspaper, the Innovation Network Corp of Japan is set to invest around 130 billion yen in developments in China and across south-east Asia to help lower pollution and increase the use of renewable energy.
The Innovation Network, which consists of 19 corporate companies, has confirmed that it will provide a total of ten billion yen to a partnership which includes Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Corp and Electric Power Development to begin a green project in India.
Located in Gujarat state, the new project could provide residents with access to solar power and eco-friendly water processing facilities.
In addition, Japan's ministry of economy, trade and industry is also planning to use around 40 billion yen in funds to fund smart-community developments abroad in 2011.
