Futon bedding can easily be laid out for up to 6 people and some Ryokan have suite rooms where sleeping areas can be separated by sliding screens. Evening meals are often included and special menus offered for children.|
|Our favourite - Hakone Mikawaya Ryokan|
|This beautiful traditional Japanese inn has lovely suite rooms consisting of two separate sleeping areas one of which can be Western style if you prefer. Each room has full en-suite facilities. The wooden building and the rooms themselves have a timeless elegance and the service is first rate. Children’s meals can be prepared and the rooms are suitable for up to 6 people. The Ryokan is located in the centre of Hakone national park giving easy access to the outdoor sculpture museum, the cable car to Owakudani volcano and the boat cruise across Lake Ashi. Best of all the Yunnesun water park is just a few minutes away on foot.||
|We can recommend hotels with family rooms featuring up to 6 beds in a large room with en-suite facilities. We also have hotels that offer connecting rooms meaning you can have two rooms side by side with a connecting door. Baby beds and cots are available at a small extra charge.|
|Our Favourite - Tokyo Keio Plaza|
|The impressive deluxe family room at this first class hotel has four well sized beds and two bathrooms in a large 50sqm room. For those who prefer a little more separation the Keio also offers connecting rooms. Guests also enjoy expansive views over Tokyo’s skyline a great range of restaurants, a roof-top swimming pool (summer only) and a baby-sitting service to boot. Baby beds and cots are available free of charge and the hotel has an English speaking concierge service.||
|We have selected a number of self-catering apartments and houses that are ideal for family stays. These range from traditional newly refurbished town houses in Kyoto to modern self-catering villas in some of Japan’s best beach resorts.|
|Our favourite: Kyoto Machiya Kohakuan|
|This is a lovingly restored machiya, a traditional Kyoto townhouse. You will have exclusive use of the house which has two bedrooms (one Western style, one Japanese style), a dining area and kitchen, a bathroom, two washrooms and a discreet computer corner (laptop provided). The dining area can be used as third bedroom if need be. The house is on two storeys and has its own lovely Japanese style garden. It is also in a great location in central Kyoto. There is a convenience store 30 seconds away, a supermarket just beyond that and a post office with ATM just around the corner. This self-catering house comes complete with Skype phone and Plasma TV, Washing machine and dryer, kitchenware & tableware, a microwave, fridge and air conditioning in all rooms.||
|Beach resort hotels|
|Choose from a range of great resort style hotels in Japan’s top beach destinations. Various room types in both Western and Japanese style are available and families of up to six people can be in the same room, in a villa or cottage or in connecting rooms. The beach is near at hand and the hotel has its own swimming pool.|
Our Favourite: Premier Resort Yuga Ise Shima
|Located in the Shima National Park just over two hours south of Kyoto by direct train, this resort has great facilities including hot springs, swimming pool and a private beach directly in front of the hotel. The hotel has its own stylish restaurant and lounge both enjoying sea views. Nearby sights include the shrines of Ise, the aquarium and pearl divers at Toba, the Spain village theme park and the Iga-Ueno Ninja theme park. A range of room options are available but our favourite is the Japanese and Western style suite room featuring a separated Western style bedroom, Japanese style sleeping area and a living area. To top it off you have your own private hot spring bath. Lots of space for a relaxed family break!||
