The order, art and simplicity of the Japanese tea ceremony began during the medieval period in Japan between the 11th and 16th centuries. Initially, and unsurprisingly, the tea ceremony was an activity indulged by the nobility, as tea itself was primarily the elixir of the upper class at this time. However, it soon became popular with Zen Buddhist monks, as the monks discovered that drinking tea increased the ability to meditate and contributed to health. Samurai warriors, who practised cultural arts and performed everyday activities with a level of awareness to bring them enlightenment, also embraced the elaborate ritual of the ceremony.
At our Tea Ceremony experience, your Kimono wearing instructor will take you through all facets of the cha-no-yu (meaning hot water for tea), and it's 4 principles - harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. You will be able to ask questions and take photos, and also try your hand at preparing the tea.
As Sen no Rikyu, known as one of the fathers of Japanese tea ceremony once said:
Though many people drink tea,
if you do not know the Way of Tea,
tea will drink you up.
The tea ceremony experience is available all year round but is subject to the availability of a teacher. Please ask us and we will be delighted to include this as part of your holiday in Japan.
The tea ceremony experience is available in Kyoto and can be included as part of any stay in the city.
