We booked our trip fairly late so most accommadation had to be changed but we were very pleased with the arrangements and the locations of the hotels and Ryokans. The detailed instructions that we receved for our self guided tour was invaluable down to the exact trains we needed to catch and where and how to contact hotels or Inns so that we could be met at the station. It became our bible and it was spot on.
She was prompt and efficient in organising what we wanted and was happy to find alternative hotels especially in Tokyo as we wanted to stay in Asakusa to start. She also made sure she sent all our tickets and rail passes when she knew we would be at home.
Our Inn in Takayama was a bit out of the way and personally we did not like sharing bathroom facilities but the people were lovely and the food delicious, the Ryokan in Hakone was in a great spot for getting to Fuji and had a really good Onsen. The Citadine in Kyoto was a great location too and nice hotel. The Seaside Hotel on Miyajima was a good cross between a Ryokan and hotel the views were great, the food delicious and the staff would regularly run you into town by bus and collect you again which was very useful.
The meet and greet at the aiport was on time and quickly delivered us to our hotel. The Shinkansen and buses were spot on and clean and spacious
We had a day's guide in Tokyo she was very good and managed to cover a lot of areas and was very informative aas was our guide in Kyoto who also took us to an exciting Sushi bar and funky cafe.
We loved Japan it was exciting because the culture is so different but everyone was so welcoming and went out of their way to help you. The food was amazing from the delicious Sushi to the beautifully presented multi course dishes at the Ryokans. If you are in Kyoto staying at the Citadine Hotel and need a meat fix a fun place to eat is Jyu Jyu Karubi ( Korean BBQ) we were at least 40 years older than the youngsters in there and hadn't a clue how to order the food on the computor but they were very helpful and we soon had masses of delicious food to cook on the BBQ at our table There were too many highlights to mention but Hakone and the amazing clear views of Fujisan were very special. We were also privileged enough to see some traditional weddings and a wonderful Noh Play at the oldest Noh stage in Japan on Miyajima island. The shrines in Nikko were the most beautiful and the gardens in Kyoto were stunning. We have not stopped talking about our trip since we came back and that is over a month ago now and we would love to go back and maybe do Hokaido as well.
It was great to travel independently but with the reassurance of a detailed info guide and a contact in Japan should we need it. The guide saved us a lot of time in wondering how to plan our travel or our day's sightseeing

Fantastic service from both the UK and Japanese side. Amazing efficiency as well as concern for our welfare/progress/enjoyment during the trip!
Great knowledge of the country and quick comeback on my specific requests with a proposed itinerary. Once we had settled it, the bookings were all done very quickly. I also heard from at least 2 of our B&B hosts that Jocelyn had called to see how we were doing during the trip and was most impressed at this level of service.
Was not sure what to expect in many places (except city hotels which were as expected) but was amazingly surprised at how well we were looked after outside town in the smaller places. We could not believe how friendly, welcoming and way more than helpful all our hosts were
Excellent - Japanese efficiency truly reigned supreme - I've been living in Germany and am used to punctuality but this was better than German standards!
All was self guided
We struggled initially with the food but with willingness to try everything (tho one of us is veggie so not always possible) you do find things you like - it's just finding them on another menu which is the challenge! The food words at the back of the info pack came in useful. I believe my veggie request had not reached the people in chikumbi which caused a few probs (I was embarrassed at leaving so much on my plate). One comment would just be on directions to the hotels from where transport dropped you. Appreciate that this must be taken from hotels themselves but a couple of times, assumptions were made that we'd arrive at a certain point and so we were trying to follow directions from the point we actually got in at (Osaka as example)which was different. So sometimes directions may need to be a bit more foolproof? The other thing which Rachel and i agreed is that it would be excellent if you could suggest (clearly not treat as a must) that host families would really appreciate postcards/typical items from home. They not only showered us with hospitality (and even drove Rachel to doctor's in Ishigaki), they kept giving us small gifts and we were a little frustrated we had nothing to provide in return. though this was not expected, of course, we'd love to have thought of it but didn't in our chaotic rush moving house etc before our trip! Final comment - you gave indication of food prices in your restaurant recommendations (very useful) but you could do with warning people of the very high prices in one or two bars. I am actually thinking of a cocktail bar in Kyoto which was recommended. Fortunately we only had one drink in there as it was the most expensive drink either of us had ever had - lovely as it was! So wouldn't like others to have the same experience and possibly unwittingly run up a huge bill!
With the level of info we had, all the transport pre-arranged and passes reaching us before we needed them, travelling in Japan was made really easy, despite the language and cultural differences. It was clear we had had things arranged and had info from people who really knew what they were talking about as well as having a passion for Japan.

Understood what we wanted and delivered a package of travel and accommodation that meet our needs
Ruth provided a prompt and complete service, she was happy to change the program to suit our requirements. She was always available to help with questions that arose as we got close to departure.
Out of 26 nights only one hotel was disappointing Hotel Kawanami was tired in its décor and although there was a bar it was closed and there were no staff whom we could get a drink from. The food at all the hotels was excellent
Hire car pick ups and drop offs were easy to locate. Hire company staff were helpful in guiding us through Sat Nav. Rail travel was on time, clean and more efficient than I could have imagined

The Japanese food met our expectations. We were met in Tokyo by my business contacts who dined us in a Sushi restaurant looking out to the Tokyo Sky Tower for a multi course Sushi meal and a Shibyu Shibyu restaurant. We tried to find locally produced food in the places we stayed and I me please to say that we only ventured away from Japanese food for 3 meals during our visit. We found the Japanese people friendly and helpful. When left at Sapporo station with the prospect of missing our flight as the train had been cancelled due to an accident we joined a queue at the taxi rank, a lady behind ask if we were going to Chitose Airport as she had seen us checking flight times. She offered to share a taxi with us and paid more than half the fare as she was travelling on business and could claim the costs from her company.
As this was our first trip to Japan we had felt a little daunted at the prospect of having to arrange a 26 day itinerary with accommodation and travel ourselves. You made the experience so effortless that we now feel that when we go back we will be confident to make the plans ourselves. We will use your services for rail passes as we felt these were true value for money and the information at the stations was so easy to follow. Since getting back we have recommended your services to two friends and will continue to do so.

InsideJapan was brilliant: from our initial enquiry call to the flexibility in putting our tour together and the booking itself, the information provided, and the courtesy calls before during and afterwards, we encountered nothing but efficient, professional and enthusiastic people at Insidejapan. We would have no hesitation recommending the service to anyone who wants to experience Japan.
Professional, reliable and efficient; and very friendly and enthusiastic about our trip.
well chosen accommodation and very well located
the transport and travel advicve provided was absolutely superb.
We were particularly impressed by both guides ("Mika" in Tokyo and "Nok" in Kyoto). They were not only knowledgeable and informative, butalso very friendly and interesting and allowed us an insight into japanese culture that we would not have been able to gain ourselves in the time available. They were also very accommodating of our personal wishes and interests and we would have no hesitation recommending having a guide to anyone who is planning to visit Japan.
This was a fantastic experience. We had a great deal of fun as well as packing in some amazing sights, sounds and experiences of Japan.
My partner jane is vegetarian. The breakfasts at the accommodation you selected in Tokyo (Richmond Asakusa) and Kyoto (Best western)were fantastic - a banquet for veggies (and non-veggies too) and we loved the range and freshness of the tastes. The Ryokan in Hakone also provided excellent breakfast and the two dinners were amazing. They went to a lot of trouble to produce interesting fare. Dinners out in Tokyo and Kyoto were more of a struggle, with most things based on fish stock, so we often ate Indian and Italian.
The Ryokan in Hakone was an amazing experience - the monorail ride down the steep wooded mountain side was simply magical.
We loved the Onsen baths at the Ryokan too(we went for the private baths ("the Rocks" - 2 hot pools set in the river bed and "the cedars" - a smaller garden affair which we visited in rain which was a really unusual but lovely experience).
One particular overall highlight for us was the open air museum in Hakone. The range of sculptures (20+ Henry Moore sculptures, a Miro, an amazing collection of works by Picasso and numerous other sculptures set against the dramatic and beautiful mountain scenery of Hakone was simply breathtaking. Our subsequent cable car and boat rides to see beautiful panaramic views of Mt Fugi didn't quite go to plan - all we saw was fog and, rather than awe, felt high winds! However, on the bullet train back to Tokyo a few days later we happened to look out of the window and got a fantastic view of Fugi san in brilliant sunshine - patience is obviously a virtue!
We really enjoyed the Geisha and samurai dress up in Kyoto (can send you some photos if you like?. Visiting the great Buddha at Nara was awe-inspiring, but there really were too many highlights to list on this brilliant holiday.
Karaoke was great fun and the locals were very friendly and helpful.
We also played Patchinko on our first night in Tokyo - the gawdy lights and really loud music drew us in and the locals (and our guide the next day) thought it was very funny having Westerners trying their hand in a Patchinko hall.
All in all we had a fabulous and very memorable time in Japan and want to thank Insidejapan for putting such a brilliant itinerary together for us.
InsideJapan Tours is a pleasure to do business with. Everyone with whom we spoke was knowledgeable and friendly, with an enthusiasm that was infectious. The service was very professional and rapid and the delivery and useful content of the information supplied was outstanding. The excellent planning and organisation of InsideJapan allowed us to really get the most from our 10 days in Japan and we are very pleased that we selected Insidejapan to arrange our tour.

Always available and helpful, and quick to respond to our numerous queries ahead of the trip. We always felt you were there if needed - which gave us the confidence to go ahead and do our own independent things.
Friendly, knowledgeable and easy to deal with.
Our accommodation requests were interpreted correctly so we had no complaints about any of the hotels we stayed in. We did learn it was better to take twin rooms in Japan in order to get a more "western" sized room (double rooms are generally very small).
The airport transfer on day one went very smoothly, and it was worth doing. The Japan Rail Pass was amazing and it opened up the whole country to us - we took a couple of unplanned side trips with total confidence and no extra cost.

Breakfasts in all hotels were excellent, and exceeded expectations. As with all hotels, eating in was generally expensive, so we ate out - but never had a problem finding food we liked.
Because you know what you are doing, and you are very efficient - and you follow up at every stage, even during the holiday itself. We also thought your pricing was very reasonable.
Many thanks for your feedback, Colin. I'm really pleased that you enjoyed your time in Japan . A meet and greet transfer from the airport on arrival takes a lot of the stress out of your first day and the Japan Rail Pass makes your time so flexible. I hope you had a good time exploring the Inland Sea islands during the Setouchi Art Festival. Thanks again, Vivienne

Did not require that much help truthfully. Mat, my consultant was prompt when needed.
Easy to talk to; knowledgeable about answering my
questions.
Good size; glad I had a hot pot and mine-fridge
at all hotels.
Japan Pass was great; the Pasmo card was easy to use as well.
'Taka' in Kyoto was superb; the day spent with him
was one of the highlights of the entire trip. Hiroki, in Tokyo was very knowledgeable and well
prepared; only wished she could project her voice
a bit louder.
Breakfasts were the same every morning at all three places I stayed.
Tremendous value for the money. The hotels used beat my expectations; their locations made travel
so easy.
Hi Jim, thanks for your feedback. I am very pleased to read that you really enjoyed your vacation in Japan. The Japan Rail Pass is really useful isn't it! It is also excellent value for money. When we choose hotels to put in our trips to Japan we do consider location carefully so I am pleased it worked well for you.
Jim took a modified version of our Self Guided
Golden Route trip, and visited Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto before continuing to Osaka on his own.

A Really good introductory tour to Japan. I really enjoyed the rail travel, the food, really friendly people and lots of interest to see.
The tour group worked well, as there was a good mix of ages.
Andrew made the tour a fun experience and took us to a lot of excellent, good value restaurants.
It was very nice to get a phone call after we got home, asking how we got on and if we had had a good time.
The Ryokans we stayed in were really enjoyable and friendly places with excellent food.
One of the most enjoyable parts of the tour were the rail journeys.
Food was consistently excellent.
The instructions on finding the Train at Narita airport need more clarification. It needs some explanation that it works like the Paris RER / Metro system and the Keisei line trains travell through the metro lines once they reack Tokyo.
I think you offer more comprehensive itineries and better value for holidays in Japan as compared with the other major group tour operators.
Hi Robert,
Many thanks for submitting your feedback. We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed your Japan Unmasked Small Group Tour and found it to be a good introduction to Japan.
Thank you for your comment about the airport transfer at Narita - we will see what we can do to improve the instructions. We're very glad to hear you enjoyed the rail journeys and food, and that you got along well with the rest of your tour group.
